Although my parents have been divorced since I was a wee one, occasionally they portray some strikingly similar personality characteristics, the sort that work to remind me why perhaps they got together in the first place. An example of this would be both of their reactions to the death of Tim Russert. I think the Hindenburg exploded in each of their brains. Like I said, I found-and find-it sad too; I actually did watch that show. But those two flipped their shits. And though I dealt with my Dad’s emo-ness over the phone, my mother’s has been in the flesh, and thus ten times more alarming. And she actually told me to contact his son the other day while also mentioning that he seems like a guy I would want to end up with. Creepy?
This all started after she saw Mr. Russert’s son give an interview on the Today show. Apparently my mom found him quite the striking young gentleman, and she started harassing me to go on the show’s website and watch the clip while I was on the computer. Of course, I said “thanks, but no thanks”, I’ll stick to stalking people on facebook right now and try not to purposefully make myself depressed. But of course, the madre didn’t relent.
“No, but really Caroline, you should check it out. It’s so inspiring. I think you’d really be interested in him. What a solid young man. A SOLID YOUNG MAN, I SAY.”
I replied that maybe instead I should just write the kid a fan letter.
“You should!” my Mom said, excited by the idea. “That would be so nice!”
“Mom, I replied. “I was kid-ding. What would I say, “Sorry your Dad died…I like you?” That’s insane.”
“Well, you never know. He just seems like he’s got a good head on his shoulders and I think you might like to expose yourself to that.”
Then she sauntered away. My mom loves saying “you never know” and then sauntering away. It’s her signature move as of late. And I’m always slightly baffled after I have exchanges with her like that. I go from feeling scared for my safety that we live under the same roof to…to…wondering…Wait, is she right? Should I be contacting Tim Russert’s son to tell him that his Dad really impacted my parents, that I admire his father’s work ethic and intensity and upstate New York vibe, and like, maybe, like, if you’re in the area when I’m in the area we could get a drink and stuff because my Mom saw you on the Today show and you seem solid?
Her insanity is clearly rubbing off.

My mother said the EXACT same things to me this morning while tearing up watching Little Russert shaking people’s hands at the funeral…”Mallory, I want you to marry him.”

I just stumbled upon your blog, and I LOVED this post. I can picture my mom saying much of the same stuff. Best wishes to you and Tim Russert’s son.
